What Anodize Chips Do to Your Lungs

What Anodize Chips Do to Your Lungs

And Why You Should Consider Upgrading Your Cannabis Accessories

If you've been using cannabis accessories for any length of time, then you already know that some products are better than others. We've all used a cheap weed grinder or cone loader at some point in our lives. They are usually made of cheap plastic…and the “better” ones are made of metal, but between painted threads, and painted blades, it creates a lot of toxins ending up in your product.

So, what are the results of using an inferior grinder? Is it really a big deal?

Bad cannabis accessories can lead to a bad smoking experience. However, a bad smoke isn’t nearly as dangerous as the foreign elements that may potentially be in your product.

The worst-case scenario has to do with the long-term effects of using inferior cannabis accessories. Most notably, the anodized aluminum that is present on some cannabis accessories such as weed grinders. Although they look chic and fashionable at first glance, anodized aluminum that chips off can negatively influence your overall health.

What is Anodizing? How Does it Apply to the Cannabis Industry?

The process of anodizing is an electrochemical process that converts a metal surface into something decorative, corrosion-resistant, and more durable. It’s most often used on aluminum for things like cookware, automobiles, and cannabis accessories.

The problem with anodizing cannabis accessories – namely, weed grinders – is that the constant grinding and twisting can degrade the anodized surface of the aluminum which causes it to chip and flake. This doesn’t apply to every single weed grinder in the industry, but enough of them that it’s a valid concern.

The anodized chips can wind up in your product unbeknownst to you, and you may end up inhaling some of the particle matter. It doesn’t take a doctorate to know that inhaling this type of foreign matter may wreak havoc on your lungs and throat.

What are the Health Risks of Inhaling Anodized Chips?

Anodized chips and aluminum are not meant to be inhaled. Doing so may result in one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Cough
  • Sore throat
  • Tightening of chest
  • Headache
  • Fever
  • Nausea
  • Burning sensation in throat and/or lungs

If you notice any one or more of these symptoms occurring, it may be due to inhaling aluminum and/or anodized chips. Although most cases of inhaling anodized chips resolve themselves naturally, don’t hesitate to make an appointment with your physician if you continue to experience symptoms.

Having said that, now is a great time to take a look at your weed grinder to see if there are any sections of anodized coating missing from where the blades are. You may be unintentionally introducing foreign elements into your cannabis each time you grind it. Look into getting a replacement as soon as possible.
